Common types of filters
Release time:

Filters are indispensable components in agricultural irrigation systems. The impurities in water can be broadly categorized into physical impurities, chemical impurities, and biological organic impurities. Their practical application in fields—especially in large-scale operations—is highly essential. However, in small-scale drip irrigation systems covering just a few mu (about 0.3–0.6 acres), we often see that many farmers have not yet installed filters directly. Many farmers claim that since their drip irrigation tapes are replaced once a year, they don’t experience clogging. Yet, prolonged use without proper filtration can significantly affect the main pipelines as well. So, what kinds of filtration equipment are currently available both domestically and internationally? We’ll briefly introduce them next.
Let me explain to you the common types of filters.
Filters are indispensable components in agricultural irrigation systems. However, in small-scale drip irrigation systems covering just a few mu (about 0.3–0.6 acres), we often see that many farmers have not yet installed filters directly. Many farmers claim that since their drip irrigation tapes are replaced once a year, they don't experience clogging. Yet, prolonged use without proper filtration can significantly affect the main pipelines as well. So, what kinds of filtration equipment are currently available both domestically and internationally? Let’s take a brief look at them next.
I. Gravel Filter
Sand-and-gravel filters are commonly used in large-scale cultivated farmlands that rely on surface water for irrigation, particularly in drip irrigation systems. Such filters typically consist of two or more filter tanks connected in parallel via outlet piping to form a filtration station. The filters can remove organic impurities such as algae, moss, certain bacteria, and other organisms. When using lake water for irrigation, sand filters are the best choice, as they provide excellent filtration performance over large areas.
II. Centrifugal Filter
A centrifugal filter operates on the principle of centrifugal force, causing water to spin and separating sand from the water. When properly selected, this system maintains a constant flow rate and exhibits excellent sand-removal performance. It is primarily used in irrigation water with high sand content, and this type of filter is widely adopted in the northwest region of China.
Generally, gravel filters are used as the primary filter, followed by mesh filters as the secondary filter, thereby extending the cleaning cycle of the sand filter.
III. Grid Filter
Mesh filters are effective for treating water containing inorganic impurities such as silt and sand. However, they generally have limited effectiveness when dealing with water rich in organic impurities. Unlike gravel filters, mesh filters cannot store large amounts of organic impurities and are typically used as a secondary filtration stage.
IV. Cascade Filter
A stacked filter is a type of filter that lies between gravel filters and mesh filters. It consists of numerous thin, circular layers stacked on top of one another; when tightened, these layers form a cylindrical filtering element. Water flows through the spaces between the stacked layers, while impurities remain trapped in the filter chamber. Stacked filters are currently widely used across the country and come in manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic cleaning versions. Their filtration capacity ranges from 20 to 400 mesh.
V. Y-Strainer
For water quality containing sand and other debris, these impurities can damage valves, pump impellers, and other components of drip irrigation systems. Various Y-type filters are commonly used to remove these impurities; they are typically installed downstream in the filtration system as a secondary filter, or they can also be placed at the upstream end of field branch lines to prevent clogging of capillary tubes.
