Eight-position shift cylinder

The eight-position shift cylinder is the primary shifting actuator used in large workover rigs and other heavy-duty equipment for both operation and travel. The compressed air source that drives the piston of the shift cylinder and the stop rings at various stages is provided through the operation of the eight-position shift valve.
In the pneumatic system composed of a cylinder and a shift valve, the shift valve serves as the control element, while the shift cylinder acts as the actuator.
The structural principle of the shift cylinder is shown in the figure. Inside the cylinder, there is a piston 14 equipped with six stop rings—11, 12, 13, 16, 17, and 18. Piston 14 is fixed to the piston rod 2. The three stop rings—11, 12, and 13—are fitted over the pull rod and can slide along the piston rod 2. The large spring 6 and the small spring 7 press against the front spring seat 8. The stop-ring spring 10, together with the rear spring seat 8, presses against the stop ring 11. The stop rings 11, 12, and 13 are tightly seated against the piston 14. When no air pressure is applied inside the shift cylinder, under the combined action of the outer spring 6, the inner spring 7, and the stop-ring spring 10, the stop rings 11, 12, and 13, along with the piston 14, are in force equilibrium and remain stationary at the position shown in the figure. On the portion of the piston rod that extends out of the cylinder body, there are scale markings indicating the positions of each gear. Thus, the current positions of the stop rings and the piston represent the neutral position of the shift cylinder.
The stop rings 16 and 17 are fitted onto the rod 20, while the ring 18 is fixed to the rod 20. When no air pressure is applied—that is, when the shift cylinder is in neutral—they can be positioned anywhere within their respective ranges of motion.
The eight-position shift cylinder has eight intake ports—1A, 6A, 3A, 3, 2, 5, 3, 6, and 1. The positions, names, and locations where the input air pressure is applied are shown in the figure.
